How to evaluate tutoring and academy reviews
Inspect reviewer identity, timing, incentives, specificity, sample size, and moderation before treating a review as useful evidence.
Questions to ask
- Who wrote the review and when?
- What experience is actually described?
- Are sponsorship, moderation, and selection effects visible?
Methodology
Separate a reviewer’s account from a provider-wide outcome claim. Record the platform’s moderation and sponsorship rules and look for patterns rather than a single testimonial.
Trade-offs
- Reviews can reveal questions official pages omit but are selective.
- A large review count may improve coverage without proving quality or outcomes.
Evidence and sources
- The Federal Trade Commission's review and endorsement guidance addresses fake or false consumer reviews and testimonials and requires claims to be evaluated in their advertising context; a review count alone does not prove provider quality or outcomes. Endorsements, Influencers, and Reviews
